If you have an old wingback chair you’ve been planning to recover for a long time, now lets walk to fabric section with me.

Whether you’re buying new furniture or reupholstering an old favorite, fabric selection is one of the most important choices you’ll need to make. With so many fabric options available it can become a bit overwhelming. Color and pattern are essential, but even before you get to that point you need to pick the right type of fabric for your furniture and your lifestyle.

Difference Between Upholstery Fabric and Regular Fabric?

Upholstery fabric is heavyweight material that uses either a pile or flat weave. It usually features woven patterns instead of dyed-in patterns that might wear away. Specialty upholstery fabrics like velvet almost always have a sturdy backing to make them hold up better, remember about upholstery fabric is that it has to survive lots of friction and hard use without wearing away. Lots of modern upholstery material goes through something called a “double rub” test. This process uses a mechanical arm abrading the fabric to find out how long it can survive friction!

If you’re looking for high durability in a domestic setting you should use a heavy use fabric that is 15,000–30,000 double rubs.

Texture is also important for furniture you’re going to be spending a lot of time sitting on. Scratchy fabric might not be the end of the world for the chair in the study no one ever sits on. But for your sofa and lounge chair that gets every day use, it needs to be comfortable. Test fabric on your arm or face to check for roughness — the tougher skin on your hands might not pick up on more subtle scratchiness.

LINEN      Linen comes from the flax plant. This material has a light, airy, soft feel to it. It usually has a distinctive loose weave that gives it a texture you can feel under your fingers.

It gives a gorgeous, bright, fresh look to a room and feels very comfortable and soft! That said, linen shrinks easily when washed. You can’t use bleach on it, as that will damage the falx fibers. It stains and wrinkles incredibly easily.

Cotton

Part of a blend. The best-quality cotton blends will generally contain about 45% to 60% cotton.

Durability and use depend on the weave and finish. With comfort and stability, cotton is meant to provide a soft feel to your furniture.

Silk

Silk is probably one of the more expensive options for upholstery fabric. It should only be used in a formal living room one without heavy use. Silk needs to be professionally cleaned if something is spilled or soils the furniture.

Velvet

Velvet more often contains synthetic fibers like polyester. You can find velvet in several different styles, such as crushed velvet or embossed velvet. It used to come from silk and had a prohibitive price tag, velvet still has associations with luxury and wealth today.Though comparatively difficult to clean, velvet stands out for its comfort, texture, and rich color options.

Leatherette

Leatherette is a synthetic material designed specifically to mimic leather. It’s also known as, faux leather, pleather, and synthetic leather, although in the furniture industry, leatherette is the most common name. It’s typically made from natural or synthetic cloth fibers coated in PVC or polyurethane and contains no animal by-products, unlike real leather which is made from animal hide treated with chemicals.

When we are thinking of buying fabric for our sofa we should consider steady fabric and theme base combinations.
